Group tours - are they the best option?

Group tours can seem like an attractive option when planning a vacation or trip. They offer convenience, the opportunity to meet new people, and often promise to take care of all the details. However, as appealing as they may appear, group tours come with a set of drawbacks that may make them less than ideal for travellers.

Lack of flexibility

Group tours often follow a set itinerary, leaving little room for deviation or flexibility. If you're someone who likes to explore at your own pace, try new restaurants, or take spontaneous detours, a group tour may not be the best fit. You'll be expected to stick to a schedule and follow the group's plan, which may not align with your interests or preferences.

Limited time at each location

Group tours typically visit multiple destinations in a short amount of time. While this may sound like a great way to see a lot in a short period, it often means spending only a few hours or less at each location. This can feel rushed, leaving little time to fully experience a place, take in the local culture, or get to know the locals. If you're looking to immerse yourself in a destination, a group tour may not provide enough time to do so.

Crowded transportation

Group tours often involve crowded transportation to drive people to each new destination, often in the form of cramped buses or vans with little legroom. You may end up spending 5+ hours in the bus each day as you make your way to a destination, with only a small break to grab some food or stretch your legs. Additionally, travelling in a large group can be noisy and chaotic, making it difficult to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Lack of authentic experiences

Group tours often cater to a broad audience, which can mean staying in tourist hotspots and missing out on authentic experiences. Tour operators may take travellers to the same restaurants and attractions that cater to tourists, rather than seeking out local favorites. This can make for a less immersive and less authentic experience.

So while group tours may offer convenience and the opportunity to meet new people, they come with a set of drawbacks that may make them less than ideal for travelers seeking a unique and personalized experience. If you're looking to truly immerse yourself in a destination and travel at a slower pace, consider a TIDDLY trip instead.
